Parent-Child Interaction Therapy (PCIT)

Building stronger connections between caregivers and young children.

Parent Child Interaction Therapy (PCIT) is an evidence-based therapy that helps caregivers strengthen their relationship with their young child while learning practical tools to navigate big emotions, challenging behaviors, and difficult parenting moments.

PCIT is designed for young children, typically ages 2–7, and their caregivers.

What makes PCIT different?

PCIT is not traditional child therapy where a child comes in alone to talk about feelings or behaviors.

Instead, caregivers are active participants. You and your child are together during sessions while your therapist provides live coaching, helping you practice new skills in the moment.

The goal is not to "fix" your child. PCIT helps caregivers better understand their child's needs, strengthen connection, and build confidence in responding to challenging moments.

Who is PCIT helpful for?

PCIT may be a good fit for families experiencing:

  • Frequent tantrums or big emotional reactions
  • Defiance, arguing, or difficulty following directions
  • Aggression or unsafe behaviors
  • Power struggles during routines like mornings, meals, or bedtime
  • Parenting moments that feel overwhelming or exhausting
  • Behavior concerns at home, daycare, or school
  • A desire to strengthen connection and communication with your child

PCIT can also be especially helpful for adoptive and foster families working to build trust, attachment, and security.

What can families expect?

PCIT typically includes two phases:

Strengthening Connection

Learn skills that help your child feel understood, supported, and connected.

Building Confidence & Consistency

Learn calm, effective ways to set limits, manage behaviors, and navigate difficult moments.

Most families attend weekly sessions, and treatment length varies based on each family's needs and progress.
